VPIC Supports Newly Proposed EPA Methane Regulations

News

The VPIC voiced their support for the newly proposed U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) supplemental methane regulations in a press release issued by the nonprofit, Ceres. These supplemental regulations complement the Methane Emissions Reduction Program issued as part of the Inflation Reduction Act earlier this year. They aim to strengthen the current regulation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by adding provisions that ensure regular inspections at high-emitting, lower-producing wells; advance monitoring technologies for leaks; and address pollution from abandoned wells. As noted by the VPIC Chair, the Commission expects portfolio companies to set a high bar in limiting methane emissions to maximize profitability. VPIC engages oil and gas portfolio companies on strategies towards this end, such as eliminating routine flaring and improving detection, direct measurement, and reporting. Federal regulation can offer a baseline to reach thousands of individual U.S. producers efficiently which helps all asset owners mitigate climate risk in their portfolios.
